3 Key Trends Shaping Modern Social Media Marketing

Every year the social media landscape shifts as new trends emerge that shape and mold it in different ways. For savvy businesses these trends represent an opportunity to get ahead of the pack and make their mark while engaging a wider audience in the process.

There are already several very noticeable trends that are shaping social media marketing this year. Out of them the 3 that seem to be playing the biggest role are:

Live Video

Although live-streaming is nothing new, it is only over the last few years that it has started to be introduced on social media with platforms such as Periscope leading the charge. Now that Facebook has joined in with Facebook Live, and Twitter and Instagram also have their own live video features – the game is truly afoot. Already live video has been shown to increase engagement levels and attract more viewers who stay and watch for longer. In short it is a trend that is likely to define social media marketing for some time.

Social Messaging & Chat Bots

Conventionally social messaging platforms like WhatsApp, WeChat, and Facebook Messenger haven’t been considered to be part of the traditional social media marketing mastermind family. However due to their massive following and the introduction of more social features, they are an area that businesses can no longer afford to ignore.

Because more and more people prefer to communicate with businesses through social messaging, it has become an important avenue to disseminate content. In line with that transformation, Facebook Messenger’s chat bot inclusion is particularly interesting – as it allows businesses to promptly and automatically respond to customer queries.

Temporary Content

Seeing the success that Snapchat had with temporary content, it is no surprise that other social media platforms such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram have rolled out their own take on it. The appeal of this type of content that disappears after 24 hours is hard to deny.

For now the main thrust of temporary content (for businesses) appears to be as a way to show a more ‘human’ side to the brand with unscripted and off the cuff content. Whether it will stay that way is anyone’s guess, though it is likely to take on new and interesting forms.

Make no mistake these are just some of the trends that are currently playing a part in the social media landscape, and others such as 360 degree video, virtual reality, and augmented reality definitely have a role as well. Additionally conventional ways to capture video content shouldn’t be overlooked either, as it is still able to interest and engage viewers.

Still if you feel there is an avenue in which you can utilize one (or more) of these trends on your business social media – it may be worth doing so. Not only is it likely to give you access to a wider audience, but it will also help you to interact and engage with your followers in new ways.

Bootstrap Business Blog Blitz: Quick Questions - Volume 2

For the last decade I've been asked daily about social media marketing, digital media, entrepreneurship, search engine optimization , retail sales, social selling, and many other topics through various outlets. These business questions come through my website, social media platforms, forums like Medium / Quora / Reddit / Google / Inbound.org, and other outlets. When I have a lot of information to share on a particular subject I'll usually write an in-depth answer in the form of an article here... but I don't always have the time. Sometimes I just give a quick answer, or whatever initially comes to mind without prepping or brainstorming.  It's actually ending up feeling a bit like  hustling entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk 's book #AskGaryVee (which I'm finishing now before posting a review), but I've actually been doing this for years with previous businesses. My first Bootstrap Business Blog Blitz was a big hit so I'm going to make this a mainstay on this...

Maintain a Work-Life Balance When Starting a New Business

Achieving a work-life balance is hard enough for any person, but it’s even harder when you’re putting in long hours. A recent survey asked entrepreneurs what they would spend their time doing if they could work fewer hours, and the top three responses were: spend more time with family and friends, travel for fun, and improve their personal health. Although it may be more difficult to accomplish a work-life balance as an entrepreneur , you can successfully balance your career, family, and leisure time.  Amount of Work  The survey found that an astounding 82 percent of entrepreneurs worked more than 40 hours per week . Specifically, 33 percent worked 40-49 hours, 30 percent worked 50-59 hours, and 19 percent worked more than 60 hours. Obviously, if you’re working that many hours, you’re probably working weekends.  The study found that an astonishing 97 percent of small business owners worked weekends, with 40 percent saying they “always” or “often” work weekends.
